Once completed, Eskom’s Mpumalanga-based Kusile coal-fired power plant, will be the world’s largest coal-fired power plant ever built. Ocon Brick were contracted to supply the clay stock bricks for all the building construction that fell within the scope of the SSBR Buildings Joint Venture.
The Kusile Power Station project commenced in August 2008, with Ocon Brick’s supply of clay stock bricks commencing in January 2012. Garrith Middleton, Quantity Surveyor at SSBR Buildings Joint Venture said “We contracted Ocon Brick to supply in excess of eleven million clay stock bricks for the Kusile project, of which 3.75 million of these bricks have been laid to date”.
Middleton said “On a project as large as this, it is imperative that the sources of supply we select have a track record for reliability and cost competitiveness. Ocon Brick not only scored well on those two key elements, but their technical support, supply of stock and punctual delivery scheduling resulted in a smooth and professional collaboration for this project”.
The balance of approximately 7.25 million clay stocks is due between now and the expected completion date for the Kusile project ending in 2019.
